Prevention, Assessment and Treatment of Pressure Injuries and Lower Extremity Ulcers Workshop

This workshop will focus on the prevention, assessment and treatment of pressure injuries and lower extremity ulcers (arterial, venous, and peripheral neuropathy/diabetic). The participant will get hands-on training with risk assessment tools, development of a care plan, wound measurement, staging and assessment and differentiating lower extremity ulcers from pressure injuries. The session will utilize the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panels’s (NPUAP) new terminology and staging system, as well as the new F686 Skin Integrity/Pressure Ulcer Regulations. The workshop will address treatment options including: debridement of wounds, treating infection, support surfaces, topical treatments, compression therapy and adjunctive therapies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss risk factors that put a resident at risk of developing pressure injuries and/or lower extremity ulcers
  • Demonstrate how to develop a skin integrity plan of care from a comprehensive risk assessment
  • Define prevention intervention strategies for pressure injuries and lower extremity ulcers
  • Identify etiologies of pressure injuries and lower extremity ulcers, including differentiating arterial, venous and peripheral neuropathy/diabetic wounds
  • Describe how to complete a comprehensive assessment (including staging) and document pressure injuries and lower extremity wounds
  • Choose effective treatment strategies for pressure injuries and lower extremity wounds

Speaker: Jeri Ann Lundgren, RN, BSN, PHN, CWS, CWCN has been working in long-term care since 1990, specializing in wound care nationally since 1994. She is board certified as a CWS (Certified Wound Specialist) by the American Board of Wound Management and a CWCN (Certified Wound Care Nurse) by the WOCN Society. Her extensive background in wound management in long-term care nationally includes: survey management, litigation support, trainer/liaison for Quality Improvement Organizations and Clinical Wound Expert for the Minnesota Department of Health. Her background also includes 4 years as a Director of Nurses in a Long Term Care facility. Ms. Lundgren is published in the WoundCare Advisor peer reviewed journal. Ms. Lundgren is currently the President of Senior Providers Resource.

Cancellations/Refunds/Substitutions: There is a $50 administrative fee for each cancellation or refund. All cancellations must be in writing. Substitutions will be accepted at no additional fee. Due to costs incurred related to the workshop, no refunds will be issued after November 15, 2017. Scholarships Available: The Scott Boord Career Development Scholarship Program gives members an opportunity to attend Aging Services programs and education events for those that otherwise would be unable to participate because of financial limitations.
